Originated in the Indian subcontinent and often stated as the “oldest religious tradition”.
Brahman is what they considered as the Supreme Being. They worship him or her,
as Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva or Shakti, Rama, Ganesha and Krishna.
Sacred scriptures are the Vedas and Upanishads and are foremost in authority. The others are Tantras, Agamas, Puranas, epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana.
The Bhagavad Gita spoken by Krishna is called a summary of the spiritual teachings
of Vedas.
Hindu sacred texts are in Sanskrit and classified into two (2) classes:
1. Shruti (that which is heard)
2. Smriti (memory, most notably the epics)
Representations: The syllable Om (representing the Parabrahman) and the Swastika
sign (auspiciousness).
Festivals: Maha Shivarati, Holi, Ram Navami, Krishna Janmastami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussera, Durga Puja and Diwali. |
